about

This track started as a bit of fun seeing how classic 1977 punk could work as a poetical and musical description of Boudicca's revolt in AD 60.

The gurly chorus of Celts in the second half of the track is "Llugh." Llugh ( 'wild') is the life-exploding Celtic god of light/lightning and harvest who gives his name to London. It is pronounced as the Welsh pronounce the first syllable of 'Llewellyn' (ie spat out along the sides of a tongue rolled to the top of your mouth.) Llugh is also the Arthurian god at the ancient Celtic root of that Norman cultivation Lancelot du lac. His magical mother, the Lady of the Lake, is a reminder of the Celtic mythology underlying Lancelot and Arthurian romance generally. Whether the Clash had all this in mind when they howled "London Calling" is debatable (though Strummer did later have a granddaughter named Boudicca.)
