As I went down to the river to pray Studying about that good old way And who shall wear the star and crown Good Lord, show me the way ! O sisters let's go down, Let's go down, come on down, O sisters let's go down, Down in the river to pray. As I went down to the river to pray Studying about that good old way And who shall wear the robe and crown Good Lord, show me the way ! O brothers let's go down, Let's go down, come on down, Come on brothers let's go down, Down in the river to pray. As I went down to the river to pray Studying about that good old way And who shall wear the robe and crown Good Lord, show me the way ! O mothers let's go down, Come on down, don't you want to go down, Come on mothers, let's go down, Down in the river to pray. As I went down to the river to pray Studying about that good old way And who shall wear the starry crown Good Lord, show me the way ! O fathers let's go down, Let's go down, come on down, O fathers let's go down, Down in the river to pray. As I went down to the river to pray Studying about that good old way And who shall wear the star and crown Good Lord, show me the way ! O sinners let's go down, Let's go down, come on down, O sinners let's go down, Down in the river to pray.

We were quite close to Lucinda Williams for a while. About ten feet for the duration of her concert at the last-but-one Cambridge Folk Festival before the pandemic in August 2018. This is because Maz is very nippy when it comes to pushing through a crowd to the front. It was a terrific gig. Lucinda's version of this track cleverly hints that maybe she's protesting too much about not missing him. We've gone for a simpler 'yay I'm free of that schmuck' version. All the way to Jackson I don't think I'll miss you much All the way to Jackson I don't think I'll miss you much Once I get to Lafayette I'm not gonna mind one bit Once I get to Lafayette I'm not gonna mind one little bit Once I get to Baton Rouge I won't cry a tear for you Once I get to Baton Rouge I won't cry a tear for you All the way to Jackson I don't think I'll miss you much All the way to Jackson I don't think I'll miss you much Once I get to Vicksburg I don't think I'll feel an urge Once I get to Vicksburg I won't even feel an urge All the way to Jackson I don't think I'll miss you much All the way to Jackson I don't think I'll miss you much All the way to Jackson I don't think I'll miss you much

Make me down a pallet on your floor Make me down a pallet on your floor Make me down a pallet soft and low When I'm broke an' I got no where to go Been hangin' around with a good time friends of mine Hangin' around with a good time friends of mine Oh, they treat me very nice and kind When I've got a dollar and a dime Weary blues everywhere I see Weary in blues everywhere I see Weary blues, honey, everywhere I see No one ever had the blues like me Way I'm sleepin', my back and shoulders tired Way I'm sleepin', my back and shoulders tired Come tomorrow, I'll be satisfied If I can catch that fast train and ride So, make me down a pallet on your floor Make me down a pallet on your floor Make me down a pallet soft and low Babe, I'm broke and I got no where to go

Thought I heard a red winged blackbird, Red winged blackbird down my road, Thought I heard a red winged blackbird, Red winged blackbird down my road. He'll be there beside the river, When Winter finally breaks its bones, He'll be king among the rushes, He'll be master of his home. Thought I heard a red winged blackbird, Red winged blackbird down my road. Thought I heard a red winged blackbird, Red winged blackbird down my road. Safe as Moses in the rushes, Builds his home on the river wide, Every time I hear him singing, Makes me feel like Spring inside. Thought I heard a red winged blackbird, Red winged blackbird down my road. Thought I heard a red winged blackbird, Red winged black bird down my road. He'll be in there singing his heart out, He'll be telling me stories too, Of where he went to winter last year, Of how he's going back there too. Thought I heard a red winged blackbird, Red winged blackbird down my road, Thought I heard a red winged blackbird, Red winged blackbird down my road.

Every day, about this time I'm pushing down to the border line And in the West, the rolling hills And the false dawn rising from a hard steel mill From the bridge, a strip of sand Between the lake and no-man's land Stretching down the harbor wide Into the shadow of the factory side From the bridge, from up on high I see the people passing by In through the gates, to the grey beyond Where they'll be working 'til the work is done Driving by, sometimes I feel I spend my life in this cage on wheels While from the fires, 'cross the blackened fields Will come the bands of shining steels Every day, about this time I'm pushing down to the border line And in the West, the rolling hills And the false dawn rising from a hard steel mill

Some say the heart is just like a wheel When you bend it, you can't mend it But my love for you is like a sinking ship And my heart is on that ship out in mid-ocean When harm is done no love can be won I know it happens frequently What I can't understand oh please God hold my hand Why it had to happen to me And it's only love and it's only love That can wreck a human being and turn him inside out Some say the heart is just like a wheel When you bend it you can't mend it But my love for you is like a sinking ship And my heart is on that ship out in mid-ocean

Lucinda's signature take on the self-imprisoning barriers men erect in their relationships with women, much more effective than stone walls (which, as the Cavalier Prisoner of Civil War Richard Lovelace affirmed to his beloved Althea 'do not a prison make'.) lyrics This wall divides us, we're on two different sides But this wall is not real, how can it be real? It's only made of concrete and barbed wire Concrete and barbed wire, concrete and barbed wire It's only made of concrete and barbed wire Back in Algiers, my darling broke my heart But he can't seem to break down this wall With two strong hands he couldn't move it at all And it's only made of concrete and barbed wire Concrete and barbed wire, concrete and barbed wire It's only made of concrete and barbed wire Down in Opelousas, dogs are at the gate And they're mean, lord, they're mean There's a wall between us, but it's not what it seems It's only made of concrete and barbed wire Concrete and barbed wire, concrete and barbed wire It's only made of concrete and barbed wire Somewhere in Louisiana my sugar's doing time But he can't spend time with me If he could get over this wall he'd see That it's only made of concrete and barbed wire Concrete and barbed wire, concrete and barbed wire It's only made of concrete and barbed wire Concrete and barbed wire, concrete and barbed wire It's only made of concrete and barbed wire

Deportee 03:56 video
The crops are all in, and the peaches are rotten The oranges are packed in the creosote dumps They're flying us back to the Mexico border To pay all our money to wade back again Goodbye to my Juan, goodbye Rosalita Adios mi amigos, Jesus and Maria You won't have a name when you ride the big airplane All they will call you will be Deportee Now my father's own father, he waded that river They took all the money her made in his life Six-hundred miles to the Mexico border They chased us like rustlers, like outlaws, like thieves Goodbye to my Juan, goodbye Rosalita Adios mis amigos, Jesus and Maria You won't have a name when you ride the big airplane No all they will call you will be Deportee The sky-plane caught fire, over Los Gatos Canyon A big ball of fire, it shook all the ground Who are these friends, who are falling like dry leaves The radio said they were just deportees Goodbye to my Juan, goodbye Rosalita Adios mis amigos, Jesus and Maria You won't have a name when you ride the big airplane No all they will call you will be Deportee But we died in your hills, we died in your valleys We died in your orchards, we died on your plains We died on your deserts, we died in your treetops Both sides of the river we died just the same Goodbye to my Juan, goodbye Rosalita Adios mis amigos, Jesus and Maria You won't have a name when you ride the big airplane No all they will call you will be Deportee.

I don't want your lonely mansion With a tear in every room. All I want's the love you promised Beneath the haloed moon. But you think I should be happy With your money and your name And hide myself in sorrow While you play your cheating game. Silver threads and golden needles Cannot mend this heart of mine. And I dare not drown my sorrow In the warm glow of your wine. You can't buy my love with money Cause I never was that kind. Silver threads and golden needles Cannot mend this heart of mine. ... Silver threads and golden needles Cannot mend this heart of mine. And I dare not drown my sorrow In the warm glow of your wine. You can't buy my love with money Cause I never was that kind. Lake Charles 03:36
This elegy reminds us of an old stager we knew at folk clubs, now sadly passed away. We sing it in loving memory of him. We thought about singing 'He had a reason to get back to King's Lynn' but didn't. It might not stop us singing the famous Cash-Carter duet 'as I'm Going To Thrapston.' lyrics He had a reason to get back to Lake Charles He used to talk about it He'd just go on and on He always said Louisiana Was where he felt at home He was born in Nacogdoches That's in East Texas Not far from the border But he liked to tell everybody He was from Lake Charles Did an angel whisper in your ear And hold you close and take away your fear In those long last moments We used to drive Through Lafayette and Baton Rouge In a yellow Camino Listening to Howling Wolf He liked to stop in Lake Charles 'Cause that's the place that he loved Did you run about as far as you could go Down the Louisiana highway Across Lake Pontchartrain Now your soul is in Lake Charles No matter what they say Did an angel whisper in your ear And hold you close and take away your fear In those long last moments He had a reason to get back to Lake Charles He used to talk about it He'd just go on and on He always said Louisiana Was where he felt at home Did an angel whisper in your ear And hold you close and take away your fear In those long last moments Did an angel whisper in your ear And hold you close and take away your fear In those long last moments In those long last moments credits from Lucinda (EP), released May 12, 2022 license
